One of the downsides of living in a vacation area is that many businesses close for all or part of the winter. Note that other businesses may limit opening days/hours during the coldest months. Call ahead. I’ll try to keep this list updated but make sure to check before you head out. And be sure to support the places that are open this winter!
Here’s what I found in looking for closures. Some places don’t specify when they’ll reopen; if we have a warm spring, they likely will reopen well before Memorial Day. Have I missed something? Let me know!
Cool Runnings, a Jamaican restaurant in Michigan City, closed from Feb. 2 to March 17.
Whittaker Wine Merchants in New Buffalo. Closed until January 28. (Great alternative: PE Bottle Shop in Three Oaks.)
Langes in Michigan City, the cutest meat market in all the land, is closed til late February or early March. (Try 6 Linden in Three Oaks for locally sourced meat.)
Dunebillies in Michigan City (one of my favorite breakfast spots; the food is terrific and it feels like you’re on vacation here): Reopens April 15. A nice alternative is Panini Panini in Michigan City.
Stop 50 in Michiana: The popular wood-fired Neapolitan pizza joint reopens in spring. Get your wood-fired fix in the meantime at Beer Church in New Buffalo or Pizza Terra in Burns Harbor.
Fishcamp in Michigan City: Closed until Feb. 4. In the meantime, consider chef/owner Nicole Bissonnette’s other spot, Joe & Freddy’s, a tavern with food you wouldn’t expect from a roadside joint (I’d say “elevated” but I hate that overused word), in the Pines It’s closed for a shorter break, reopening Jan. 9.
Luisa’s Swedish Bakery & Market in Harbert: Closed until Jan. 22.
Timothy’s: Closed til Jan. 14.
Skips in New Buffalo: Closed the first two weeks of January.
Swingbelly’s in Michiana: Closed Jan. 2 through Feb. 2
Ghost Isle in New Buffalo: Closed through spring.
Three Oaks’ Froehlichs, both the bakery and the restaurant: Closed til Jan. 13 (thank god I just stocked up on bagels for my freezer).
Flagship: Closes Jan. 2. Re-opening date for this fish market is up in the air.
Redamaks in New Buffalo: Closed til spring.
Susans in Sawyer: Closed til spring. As an alternative, consider these restaurants, which are open all winter and in the same class: Hummingbird, The Historian, Post Boy and LongStory, which has a new chef.
AP Shop in Lakeside. Closed for the season.
Fred’s, a weekend pop-up serving up Detroit-style pizza at the restaurant Gather, will reopen sometime this year.
Tapa Taco in the Gordon Beach Inn in Lakeside: This oft-overlooked South American restaurant is closed through January 14. Make a note to visit when they reopen. The food is terrific, more than just tacos—and reasonably priced.
