Want to get your place in shape and finally get around to all those outdoor tasks you’ve been meaning to get to? Volunteer to be on a garden walk!

That’s what we did last fall. Boy, did this summer roll around fast! Mr. Diva, never one to do things halfway, decided to replace all the deck boards around our entire house. We did a few other things, too, to our midcentury ranch perched high on a dune. The theme for this year’s garden walk in Beverly Shores, where we live, is, roughly, fun and games: The five homes on the walk have some element of play: a petanque court (French bocce, that’s us), a pickleball court, a pool, and even a zip line!

You’ll also get a peek inside at a few of the homes (one is a classic Bartlett home, the original Spanish-style home built by the founders of Beverly Shores) on your way to the outdoor spaces. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day of. The walk (which you probably cannot actually walk unless you’re ambitious as the homes are spread out) takes place Sunday, July 13 from 10 am – 2 pm. It’s organized by the Association of Beverly Shores Residents, and proceeds go toward the maintenance of the town’s public gardens in conjunction withe the Environmental Restoration Group. Parking at the homes is limited. Visitors are encouraged to use bicycles and golf carts, or ride the shuttle bus. Guests must be able to manage stairs at some houses.

Check-in is at the Administration Building (another Bartlett, on the National Register of Historic Places) beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. Don’t miss the lovely gardens at the historic Depot across the street, which features prickly pear cacti and native plantings. There’s also a cool art show of Tom Brand paintings and a historical exhibit inside.

Plein-air artists will be set up at each home, and your ticket enters you into a raffle to win one of the paintings they produce.
