Rocco’s, an upscale steak house and oyster bar, has opened in downtown Michigan City.

Rocco’s is the third restaurant in the area from Joe and Yvonne Farina, joining Cafe Farina next door and Farina’s Supper Club in Michiana. It’s their first non-Italian spot.

On the menu: Raw oysters from both coasts, steaks, chops and burgers, plus the typical steakhouse sides (creamed spinach, asparagus, brussels sprouts).

It’s an attractive place with old-school decor and cream suede booths. It has a full bar with wine, bourbon, whiskeys and cocktails, and we’re betting the rounded-corner at the bar will be a sought-after spot. The 3,000-square-foot restaurant seats 60 inside and another 20 to 25 on a patio (which was not open when we visited on opening night).

We sampled the oysters Rockefeller (excellent), spicy caesar salad (also terrific) and yummy lobster bisque, which was poured over a few chunks of lobster tableside. My husband proclaimed the quarter-pound burger with fries ($10) a good value but nothing remarkable (other, bigger burgers are available). Another good value: The 5 O’clock Special, served any time, consisting of a Tito’s dirty martini, spicy caesar, and truffle fries.

The staff was still getting its sea legs when we visited opening night, but everyone was friendly and there were no major gaffes.

Rocco’s joins The Heron, a French bistro that opened down the street from Rocco’s in March. Lots is happening in downtown Michigan City, where a new apartment building is going up near the 11th Street South Shore Station. Coming soon are The Cellar Door at 1901 Franklin Street in a historical building from 1861, and the speakeasy Nightingale, which has only been open sporadically for live music perfomances, has teased on social media that it will soon be open regularly.

Rocco’s Tavern, 827 Franklin St., Michigan City. Reservations via Open Table are here.
